Island & Sea - Booby Cay

Where island life, local stories, and the waters of Negril come together.

The Island Experience

Life on Booby Cay

Guests enjoying a freshly prepared meal together beneath an open-air shelter on Booby Cay, Jamaica

Just offshore from Negril, Booby Cay has long been part of the DonFresh experience. Guests travel across by boat to spend time by the sea, swim in the clear Caribbean water, relax on the island and enjoy freshly prepared food in a simple, open-air setting.

This is not a polished resort excursion. It is relaxed, local and shaped by the island itself — wooden tables under the trees, food prepared fresh, the sound of the water nearby and time to enjoy the surroundings without feeling rushed.

Every visit can be a little different. Some guests come for lunch after snorkeling, some spend time swimming and exploring, and others stay into the evening for dinner as the sun goes down. The experience is intentionally flexible, giving guests a chance to enjoy Booby Cay at an easy Jamaican pace.

Rebuilding After the Storm

Hurricane Melissa left a deep mark across Jamaica, affecting communities, livelihoods and businesses throughout the island, including many that depend on tourism. DonFresh Lobsters was part of that wider story, with damage along the beachfront, to the boats and on Booby Cay.

These images offer a glimpse of the work that followed — from the first cleanup and repairs to rebuilding not just what was lost, but something stronger for the future.

The Work Continues

On Booby Cay, rebuilding has been a hands-on effort, one step at a time.

After Hurricane Melissa brought down trees and damaged structures along the beachfront, the work began with clearing debris, salvaging what could be saved and repairing the boats and island facilities.

What started as repairs has grown into something bigger. New structures are taking shape, and the island dining area is being rebuilt larger and stronger, with more room for guests to gather, enjoy fresh seafood and experience the island.

The work is still underway, but Booby Cay is already taking on new life, with stronger structures, more space to gather and plenty more memories waiting to be made.

Wild visitors at Dusk

The waters around DonFresh are home to more than lobster and reef fish. At dusk, nurse sharks and stingrays are sometimes seen moving through the shallows — familiar wild visitors that have become part of the story of this place.

Nurse Sharks - Bob & Georgina

DonFresh first came across Bob and Georgina as young nurse sharks in the mangroves.

Over time, they began following him along the beach and before long, they were turning up in the shallows outside the restaurant almost every evening.

They know his voice and the vibration he makes in the water. Some evenings, DonFresh wades into the shallows and calls for them.

Then, almost on cue, two familiar shapes appear beneath the surface and swim straight toward him.

How far out can they hear him? Some say miles.

Whether it’s instinct, familiarity or something only Bob and Georgina understand is part of the mystery. They’re wild sharks, though, and they come when they choose.

Stingrays - Stacy & Cindy

Stacy and Cindy are two familiar stingrays that often spend time in the shallows near DonFresh.

They have become regular enough that DonFresh can tell them apart — Cindy is the one with the damaged tail.

Sometimes they settle into the sand just offshore, almost disappearing until they move again.

Like Bob and Georgina, they come and go on their own schedule, adding another little bit of mystery to the waters around DonFresh.

Come See What the Tide Brings

Life around DonFresh changes with the tide. Some days bring calm water and reef trips.

Some evenings bring familiar shadows into the shallows.

And sometimes, the best moments are the ones nobody planned.
